The festival is one of only a few festivals worldwide recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as able to send its top prize winners to compete for the Oscars.

Past Prize Winners – emerging filmmakers at the time – in the National Short Film and Video Competition include Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven), Billy Bob Thornton, Alexander Payne (Sideways), and many others.

In addition, RACCOON has been selected to attend the Montreal Film Festival in September.
